At Ysleta Mission Gift Shop, we know we are a small business and that our individual actions may seem small too. But we believe responsible choices made consistently can add up over time.
For us, sustainability isn't about making grand promises. It's about looking at the way we operate every day and asking a simple question:
Can we do this with a little less waste?
Whenever the answer is yes, we try.
Reducing Paper
One of the simplest changes we have made is reducing the amount of paper used in our everyday business operations.
Whenever practical, we use electronic billing, digital payments, electronic records, online communication, and other paperless processes.
Moving more of our administrative work online helps us stay organized while reducing unnecessary printing and paper waste.
It may seem like a small change, but small changes are exactly where we believe responsible business practices begin.
Reuse Before Replacing
Before something is thrown away, we try to consider whether it can be used again.
Boxes, packing materials, containers, office supplies, and other usable materials may have more than one life.
When something can safely and appropriately be reused, we would rather find another purpose for it than immediately send it to the trash.
It saves resources, reduces unnecessary waste, and simply makes good sense for a small business.
Thoughtful Packaging
Shipping products across the country is an important part of our business, and packaging is an area where small choices can make a difference.
We try to use packaging thoughtfully—protecting your purchase while avoiding unnecessary materials whenever practical.
We also reuse appropriate shipping and packing materials when they are clean, safe, and suitable for protecting an order.
Our first responsibility is making sure your purchase reaches you safely. Our second is trying not to use more material than necessary to accomplish that.
Using Energy Thoughtfully
Our shop doesn't need every light, device, or piece of equipment running all the time.
Simple habits such as turning off unnecessary lights and equipment and making energy-conscious choices are part of our everyday operations.
These aren't dramatic changes.
They're simply good habits—and over time, good habits matter.
Being Mindful Online
Sustainability isn't limited to what we can physically see.
Our business increasingly operates digitally, from customer communication and recordkeeping to our Shopify store and online services.
We periodically review the digital tools, accounts, subscriptions, files, and services we use and eliminate what is no longer necessary.
This also helps us run a simpler, more efficient small business.
Choosing Better When We Can
We know there is always more to learn.
As better packaging, shipping, operational, and technology options become practical for a business our size, we will continue evaluating them.
Not every environmentally friendly option is financially or operationally possible for a small independent business, and we don't want to pretend otherwise.
Instead, we want to make improvements that are realistic, sustainable, and lasting.
Caring for What Comes Next
Our family has roots in the Ysleta community that reach back generations.
That gives the idea of sustainability a different meaning for us.
We spend a great deal of time talking about preserving history—protecting the stories, traditions, places, and memories passed down by the generations who came before us.
But preservation also means thinking about what we leave for the generations that come after us.
We won't change the world with one recycled box, one electronic receipt, or one light switched off.
But those choices reflect something we believe deeply:
Take care of what you have. Waste less when you can. Respect the place you call home. And leave something worthwhile for the people who come next.
That's what sustainability looks like to us.
